Your Consumer Unit

A Consumer Unit, also commonly called: "fusebox, fuseboard, meter, electric box, tripswitch, Distribution board" is the heart of your electrical installation.
Electricity coming from your meter passes through the Consumer Unit before being distributed around your property. Each circuit is protected by something we call and OCPD. You will know it as a fuse or circuit breaker. In the event of a fault, that OCPD will jump into action and disconnect power from the circuit in a split second to keep you, and your property safe.
As you are probably thinking, this is an incredibly important bit of kit to keep the lights on and to keep you safe.
We have made it our mission at Fawkes Electrical to educate our customers around Leicester about the potential dangers of old or non-maintained Consumer Units.
All of the consumer units we fit are fully compliant with the requirements of the Wiring Regulations BS7671:2022.

We are experts and specialise in replacing and upgrading Consumer Units all over Leicester!

What features should a compliant Consumer Unit Have?

  • RCBO protection, circuit breakers with a built in RCD which will disconnect power almost instantly during a fault.
  • Metal Clad enclosures, to help prevent the spread of fire.
  • Surge Protection Devices, to prevent the effects of transient overvoltages which could damage your appliances and destroy wiring.
  • MCBs, circuit breakers which can be reset after a fault, to prevent you from having to manually change fuse wire.
  • AFDDs, these are new devices which can detect arcs in a circuit, so help prevent fire, we recommend these for any socket circuit, in certain circumstances they are mandatory.
  • On completion an Electrical Installation Certficate should be issued and the Local Building Control notified by your chosen Electrician.
